Goat Dairy Frequently Asked Questions

Goat milk is milk from dairy goats. Like cow milk, it contains water, milk fat, milk proteins, lactose, vitamins and minerals, and it is used for drinking as well as for making yogurt, cheese and other cultured dairy products.

Yes. Goat milk contains lactose, the natural sugar found in all mammalian milk. Goat milk is not lactose-free, and we do not describe it that way.

Fresh, well-handled goat milk tastes clean, mild and slightly sweet, with a gentle tang some people notice at the finish. Flavour depends heavily on how the milk is handled and how fresh it is.

We do not make that claim. Goat milk and cow milk are both nutritious dairy foods with different compositions and flavour. If you have questions about your own diet or a milk allergy, speak with your doctor or a registered dietitian.

Goat yogurt is goat milk that has been fermented with live yogurt cultures. The cultures acidify the milk, which thickens it and gives yogurt its characteristic tang.

Drinkable goat yogurt is cultured goat milk made with a thinner, pourable consistency so it can be drunk rather than spooned. It is the same basic fermentation, finished to a different texture.

Friendly Goat Dairy is a new Ontario goat dairy business in pre-launch development. We are preparing a processing facility, installing specialized dairy equipment and developing fresh goat milk, goat yogurt and drinkable goat yogurt.

Goat dairy is still hard to find fresh and local in much of Ontario. We want to make it modern, approachable and easy to discover for everyday Canadian kitchens.

No. Our products are still in development and are not commercially available. We are not taking orders and we have not announced a launch date.

Our initial market is Ottawa and Eastern Ontario. Over time we hope to expand throughout Ontario and later across Canada.
